Moeraki Boulders
These blocks are scattered along the beach south of Hampden Oamaru 40km. The almost perfectly spherical rocks measuring up to 4 meters (12 feet) in circumference and weigh several tons. They are firmly rooted on the beach and have been trained on the sea bottom is about 60 million years. It began with the gradual accumulation of calcium salts around a small center. Concretions in the blocks are filled with calcite crystals.
Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand call these rocks also Kaihinaki Te ( "food baskets"). They believe that these stones are pumpkins that have been washed ashore from a boat traveling Araiteuru about 1000 years ago. According to scientists, the stones are concretions formed septarian about 60 million years go by the crystallization of calcium carbonate and charged particles around. Shag Point

- Parkside Estate is the house where famous Oamaru stone. This is pure limestone in the world that took millions of years to form.
With so much to see and do in Oamaru, this Victorian town deserves more than 1 stop for one day during your next vacation in New Zealand.
